A reminder of change

Today the note on my tea bag asked me “How have you changed throughout the past five years?”. Reading this I realized that this question is posed the wrong way. It should be “How haven’t you changed in the past five years?”. So much has happened. The only things that are the same for me are my family, my partner in crime and my good friends. Apart from that I would say that everything has changed. Five years ago I finished my masters and was working like crazy, combining several jobs to hit the road for a one year during motorbike journey across Asia. A journey that for a major part changed me into the person I am today. A journey that taught me how little I need to feel at home and yet made it hard for me to settle in again in my home country. Now I just finished my PhD, I’m recovering from what seems to have been an endless ankle injury, I’m taking evening classes to learn about motorbike mechanics and I started my first proper job that has nothing to do with me being a student of any kind. I’m preparing again for a motorbike journey, but this time one that should take us around the world and back again.

Five years. An small time period, but a world of change. I’m still me, but not the me I was five years ago.

Now let me ask you the same question: when you think back on the past five years of your life, what has really remained the same?
