A firefly goodbye
Slowly, the sun hid behind the horizon, leaving a hint of coolness in the air. The damp air from the dark forest surrounding our tent made its way towards us, brushing against our skin and holding the promise of a good nights sleep after a simmering hot day. It was 9 o’clock in the evening and we finally mustered the courage to make ourselves a nice cuppa hot tea before bed. Sipping from our cups, the forest started to come alive. Suddenly, the darkness was decorated by tiny flashing lights. Little flying lights decorated the skies while slightly differently yellow lights adorned the forest floor and bushes. Never before had we been surrounded by so many fireflies and glow worms.
The light produced by these mini insects may have a simple scientific explanation, but it makes it damn easy to believe that some magic from the oldern days still lingers in our world. And if we are honest, what is magic if not the world seen through innocent eyes that still believes in hope and beauty.
With this magical night amid the forests near the Pozar thermal baths, we said goodbye to Greece. We said goodbye to the endless archaeological treasures, to the ever changing scenery and to the (in our opinion) rather expensive campsites. Will we return one day? That’s for sure! But for now, the road carries us further towards unknown countries and hidden gems.
